Categories of Scholarships

Scholarships for the 2018/2019 Academic Year will be available in respect of following categories. GEMS Education reserves the right to update the criteria, requirements or procedure for the award of all or any category of Scholarship at any time.

Academic Excellence

We offer Academic Scholarships to students who have consistently placed at the top of their class in all their subjects for at least the last three years. If they have appeared for any international exams and have placed in the top 95th percentile (Please note you will need to provide evidence of any claims) and have the passion and commitment to continue improving your grades.

  1. Academic Scholarships shall be awarded to candidates on the basis of proven outstanding academic achievement and are subject to the student maintaining a high level of academic achievement.
  2. Academic Scholarships are available to current and prospective students of GEMS Schools from Year 7 (Grade 6) and are awarded based on a competitive application process.
  3. Academic Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of:
    • the assessment by GEMS of the candidate’s Scholarship Application Form;
    • the assessment by GEMS of a full report from each candidate's present school (both local and national benchmarks);
    • the results of verbal and non-verbal reasoning tests to be completed by the candidate;
    • the results of a written examination to be administered by the awarding GEMS school;
    • an interview with the Principal of the awarding GEMS school to assess the candidate's calibre and commitment; and
    • a final interview with the GEMS Scholarships Committee.

Creative and Performing Arts

We offer Creative and Performing Arts Scholarships to students who are passionate artistes and performers with grades that place them in the top 70th percentile in their class (Please note you will need to provide evidence of any claims) and have the passion and commitment to continue excelling in your chosen field.

  1. Creative and Performing Arts Scholarships shall be awarded to candidates on the basis of proven excellence in performing arts (including but not limited to, music, drama, theatre, spoken word, debating, dance etc.) and creative arts (such as visual arts).
  2. Eligible Creative and Performing Arts Scholarships are available to current and prospective students of GEMS Schools from Year 7 (Grade 6) and are awarded based on a competitive application process.
  3. Creative and Performing Arts Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of:
    • the assessment by GEMS of the candidate’s Scholarship Application Form;
    • the assessment by GEMS of a full report from each candidate's present school (both local and national benchmarks);
    • the achievement by the candidate of awards and recognition from relevant internationally recognized awarding bodies;
    • the results of auditions administered by the awarding GEMS school;
    • an interview with the Principal of the awarding GEMS school to assess the candidate's calibre and commitment; and
    • a final interview with the GEMS Scholarships Committee.

Sports

We offer Sports Scholarships to committed students who are placed in the top 70th percentile in their class and have consistently played their sport for the last 3-5 years, competing in a) Regional or b) International level tournaments

  1. Sports Scholarships shall be awarded to candidates on the basis of proven athletic ability, potential, determination and enthusiasm and in particular who demonstrate potential to compete at National or International level.
  2. Sports Scholarships to current and prospective students of GEMS Schools from Year 7 (Grade 6) and are awarded based on a competitive application process.
  3. Sports Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of:
    • the assessment by GEMS of the candidates Scholarship Application Form;
    • the assessment by GEMS of a full report from each candidate's present school (both local and national benchmarks)];
    • benchmark results and proof of representation honours for relevant sports (such as swimming, track & field, rugby, football, etc);
    • an interview with the Principal of the awarding GEMS school to assess the candidate's calibre and commitment; and
    • a final interview with the GEMS Scholarships Committee.

Innovation and Digital Technology

Scholarships are awarded on the basis of candidates demonstrating potential to excel in the areas of innovation & digital technology (coding, computational thinking, cryptology, app development.

  1. Eligible for current and prospective students from year 7 (Grade 6) onwards
  2. Scholarships to be awarded on the basis of,
    • Full report from candidates’ present school
    • Successful presentation/demonstration of innovation project to the Scholarship Committee
    • An interview with the principal to assess caliber and commitment

Arabic Studies

Arabic Studies Scholarships are offered to students as a part of the Academic Scholarships. These are offered to Native and Non-Native speakers.

Arabic Studies Scholarships (Native Speaker)

  1. Arabic Studies Scholarships (Native Speaker) are awarded to candidates as a sub-set of Academic Scholarships on the basis of a candidate's proven outstanding academic achievement in the field of Arabic Studies and are subject to student maintaining a high level of academic achievement.
  2. Arabic Studies Scholarships (Native Speaker) to current and prospective students of GEMS Schools from Year 7 (Grade 6) and are awarded based on a competitive application process.
  3. Arabic Studies Scholarships (Native Speaker) will be awarded on the basis of:
    • the assessment by GEMS of the candidates Scholarship Application Form;
    • the assessment by GEMS of a full report from each candidate's present school (both local and national benchmarks) which must demonstrate the applicant has:
      1. made literary contributions in Arabic (this may include authoring of poetry, novel, story or speech);
      2. an active role in spreading the Arabic language and its use inside and outside the school;
      3. a leadership role within the Arabic department;
      4. grades for internal or external Arabic language exams in the 95% percentile in terms of grade;
      5. been awarded prizes relating to the Arabic language (school, national, international); and
      6. performed in front of an audience on a school, national, international level using the Arabic language;
    • standard proficiency tests (written and oral) administered by the awarding GEMS school;
    • an interview with the Principal of the awarding GEMS school to assess the candidate's calibre and commitment; and
    • a final interview with the GEMS Scholarships Committee.

Arabic Studies Scholarships (Non-Native Speaker)

  1. Arabic Studies Scholarships (Non-Native Speaker) are awarded to candidates as a sub-set of Academic Scholarships on the basis of a candidate's proven outstanding academic achievement in the field of Arabic Studies and are subject to student maintaining a high level of academic achievement.
  2. Arabic Studies Scholarships (Non-Native Speaker) to current and prospective students of GEMS Schools from Year 7 (Grade 6) and are awarded based on a competitive application process. Only those current or prospective students whose parents or guardians do not hold (and are not entitled to hold) Arab passports.
  3. Arabic Studies Scholarships (Non-Native Speaker) will be awarded on the basis of:
    • the assessment by GEMS of the candidates Scholarship Application Form;
    • the assessment by GEMS of a full report from each candidate's present school (both local and national benchmarks) which must demonstrate the applicant has:
      1. grades for internal or external Arabic language exams in the 95% percentile in terms of grade;
      2. the ability express themselves fluently in writing and speaking;
      3. the high levels of proficiency in the reading of and listening to Arabic;
      4. high levels of proficiency in (and has demonstrated) ability to use Arabic language both inside and outside the classroom;
    • standard proficiency tests (written and oral) administered by the awarding GEMS school;
    • an interview with the Principal of the awarding GEMS school to assess the candidate's calibre and commitment; and
    • a final interview with the GEMS Scholarships Committee.
